Issues with 8 GB VRAM

Sadly my XPS 9730 with the 13900H CPU and the 4080 RTX GPU (12 GB VRAM) got fried somehow.

Its replacement is the XPS 9730 with the 13700H CPU and the 4070 GPU (8 GB VRAM).

I have now started running into issues with Prepar3d v6 saying it will take steps to account for insufficient VRAM.

All my settings are on max, I don't mind low FPS. Never had issues with the previous card like running out of VRAM.

Is 8 GB VRAM insufficient for Prepar3d v6 stock installation without any add-ons? Any mitigation suggestions?

As you can see from the system requirements, you are at the minimum necessary for the VRAM.

And since your system is a laptop, you cannot do anything about the graphics adapter.

Therefore you'll have to experiment with lowering your graphics settings, until you find a combination where P3D will run.

You now have 8GB so you should be ok when the sim is first installed with default settings for your initial tests.
Note: your previous GPU had 12 GB VRAM.

Are you having a problem when flying the default P3D flight ?

As aforementioned, absolutely no add-ons.

My issues occur in-flight around the KSEA area.

They may also happen when the flight resets.

I recall checking the GPU VRAM usage on my old device and seeing it would happily hover around 2/3rds usage, which is 8 GB, more or less.

I am just at the edge of VRAM usage, and wondering what might help compensate for VRAM issues with minimal loss in fidelity.

What is the exact message from P3D?


I have P3D6.1.11.31619 Personal version installed on my desktop PC.
My graphics card is Nvidia RTX2080Ti 11GB.
I do not have all my user settings maxed out.
I just did a screenshot of my Graphics card usage (5.1GB) with the default P3D6 flight loaded.
Can you load the default flight and post the same screenshot showing your usage?

Can you post several screenshots or a video showing all your settings?

Just saw this. The message was something to the effect of "We'll make some adjustments if you keep using too much VRAM and we could possibly crash." Task Manager's GPU VRAM utilization was close, but not exactly at 100%. I'll try to grab screenshots when I can, hopefully it's not a question of confidence in what I have reported?

My screenshot shows a lot more information than just GPU VRAM utilization .

That is why I asked you to do the same screenshot from your setup.

In the same conditions as Vaughan I have these values:
Utilization 50%
GPU memory 5.3/24.0 GB
Dedicated GPU memory 4.8/8.0 GB
Shared GPU memory 0.6/16.0 GB
GPU Temperature 55°C
Driver version 31.0.15.5222
Driver date 11/04/2024

Have you the utilization at 0% just before the message?
Is your Driver up to date?
Is your P3D a new install or the same install with a new video card?
Have you tried to back up your prepar3d.cfg and create a new cfg?
But perhaps have you already answered at these questions.

These aren't really helpful questions, as I've already indicated my settings are at maximum for everything, while you folks have admitted you're not quite on maximum for everything.
