[resolved] Frequent g3d.dll crashed P3Dv5.1 HF1

Post by danielwestdijk »

Hello all,

As of late, I am experiencing frequent crashes caused by the g3d.dll file. Before I go and troubleshoot, I'd like to know in what corner I should be looking. I am running a ton of addons like orbx, pmdg 737ngxu and several scenery airfields. I am in no way interested in removing them or in doing a fresh install. Instead, I'd like to know in what direction I should be looking to take out a specific add on.

I get the following information out of the event viewer:

Code: Select all

- System

  - Provider

   [ Name] Application Error

  - EventID 1000

I am running EA with textures set to ultra and godrays on.

SPECS

I appreciate any insight in where I can find the cause of the error and how to permanently mitigate without having to uninstall all kinds of things.

Looking forward to your input and thanks in advance

This little snippet from the Event Viewer:

c0000005

is an exception code meaning a memory access violation is taking place - someone or something, most likely an incompatible add-on, is trying to write to an area of RAM where it has no access rights.

But - it does not say who or what is doing this Bad Thing™, unfortunately...

Unbelievably unstable! Takes the fun out of simming!

Any idea where this might come from?

@ danielwestdijk ,

What are your flying and doing when you get the error?
Is it repeatable?

The source of your memory access violation, indicated by this exception code:

c0000005

will need to be taken care of before you can get any further. Simple as that.

It's hard to determine whether a crash can be replicated. The crash happens several hours into the flight and to create the same circumstances only to fly for one or two hours in order to check I get the same crash is really laboreous and cumbersome.

Nevertheless, the last two crashed occured roughly under following conditions:

1#
On intermediate approach into KDAL (default scenery) in PMDG ngxu. ILS13L roughly 15-20 nm out. No specific actions. Just panning around the cockpit with TrackIR. Perhaps looking at PMDG, I cannot recall such specific details. I was not switching views or anything.

2#
Again on intermediate approach, this time into KHOU (SXAD add on). Not yet on ILS, again about 20 nm away from the field. I cannot recall doing anything specific

My thoughts are that either loading in scenery at the arrival field or the loading of AI at the field might be an issue. I think that is the thing I will investigate first.

With regards to your remark Jorgen, obviously that c0000005 error needs addressing but it is really hard to determine where its coming from. I won't go on a hunt but going back to a vanilla P3D and then reinstall my add ons on by one. Simply not gonna do that. There are legions of complaints about this crash out there so there should be at least some viable info on its cause out there. So, again, I would be very interested to hear about most probably causes. And please a little more info than just a 'random' corrupted add on that might write into memory without permission. That's too vague. Can't do anything with that.

Thanks for the help so far though. Looking forward to some more hints.

Some more data: the P3D crash is being preceded by the following .NET runtime error:

After this event, about 5 seconds later P3D crashes. In the sim, I experience a freeze, sound falls dead and then CTD

I can certainly understand why you will not want to go back to a plain-vanilla installation and then re-install add-ons from there. A major pain, and a road I have been down myself, and where I do not want to go again.

But, let's take a look at the list of add-ons you posted earlier:

"List of some of the addons I run
- Full orbx suite (no regional areas)
- FSUIPC6
- ASP3D
- UTlive
- PMDG 737 nxgu base and -600/-700 expansion
- TIR
- CP Flight MCP interface"

Of these I only use FSUIPC myself, the most recent version (6.0.11) from November 28th. That one works fine for me.

I know there are patches/updates out for ASP3D, but there also (from some postings here) seem to still be issues, same with PMDG. I know of UTLive, but not a thing about TIR and the CP Flight MCP Interface, but for those - and for your other add-ons - the first step of course would be to check for patches/updates, and post questions to their support people.

Since you saw something involving the .NET Framework, I would search for and install everything and every version of that, both the x86 and x64 versions. I got so tired of .NET errors and Kernelbase.dll crashes that what I did myself - but this is where you need to figure out if you have the disk space for that - was to install Visual Studio 2005 and then Visual Studio 2019, which seems to have taken care of those issues.

And then of course running Windows Update regularly and updating the graphics driver every time a new one comes out....

Jorgen

Quick edit: forgot to say that I don't use ORBX either, but that does not seem to cause many issues.

Thanks, Jorgen. Much more useful into. I read about ORBX causing issues. I definitely have not ruled out ASP3D either, but with a lack of a proper alternative, flying without weather is a no go!

I am currently reinstalling visual studios 2019 to see whether that fixes it.

I always keep my NVIDIA driver up to date as it also causes BSOD's if I don't do that regularly.

@ danielwestdijk ,

You previously mentioned:
"List of some of the addons I run
- Full orbx suite (no regional areas)

- UTlive
- PMDG 737 nxgu base and -600/-700 expansion

I am running EA with textures set to ultra and godrays on.

SPECS
- with turbocharge to 5.0 GHz
- RTX 2080 super 8.0 Gb
- 32 Gb RAM"

My setup is about the same except:
I9 9900K / boost
I puruchased TrackIr but now use EZdok
I do not use CP Flight MCP interface
I purchased UTlive long ago, had problems, returned it. I use default P3D ATC / AI on some test flights.
My graphics card is Nvidia RTX2080Ti 11 GB

I have not had problems on my PMDG flights.

If you have a PMDG flight you would like a double check on I could fly it and report the results.
For debugging it is best not to have Add-ons running.

Just an update: you never know whether you have fixed an issue but I did the following: I did a scan of all drivers and updated all drivers to most up to date ones and that seems to have helped. I have not had the specific G2d and G3D.dll related issues.

Keeping fingers crossed.
