Detail terrain textures - detail1.bmp ?

Detail terrain textures - detail1.bmp ?

Hi.

Are detail terrain textures still in use - specifically: detail1.bmp in scenery/world/texture for the grass? Changing that texture does not seem to affect anything in the sim, same as switching the "detail terrain textures" menu option on/off.

The default detail1.bmp is very subtle and hard to see any real difference. However I use an Orbx replacement detail1.bmp and that provides a much better effect (and it is now obvious when it is switched on or off via the settings toggle).

p.s. I use the add-on.xml technique to install this bitmap and so keep the original install unmodified.

Thanks.

Apparently it does not seem to be working (in my case), no matter what texture is used as detail1.bmp ... At least there is no visible difference as far as I can see.

It definately works for me (in v5).

Make sure you have DETAIL_TEXTURE=1 in [TERRAIN] section of prepar3d.cfg - they seem to have removed the toggle from the settings dialog (or my old eyes couldn't see it!).

See this issue too. Shiny textures all over the place. Especially noticable in bigger distance.

Thanks, this did the trick indeed.

No way to turn it on from the menu though - only by the manual cfg edit.

And you guys say that CFG edits during install are not necessary. Ha! :P

I think you're confusing two different 'issues' - the detail1.bmp which the OP was querying is nothing to do with the new 'feature' of shining terrain and turning on that bmp does not remove that shine. It simply improves low level terrain appearance as it always did pre v5 back to fsx. Not quite sure why LM have it turned off by default (there may be good reason) or now require you to edit the cfg file to turn it on but for me it's an essential.

The shine on the terrain may be down to orbx textures - I've not actually tried default since 5 seconds after installing v5!

If you're able and willing then I've identified the shader file you can edit to dial down the effect (I find it too strong) but this reduces the effect on runways etc too.
