[RESOLVED] Unable to initialize .. with ASUS GTX 980 Ti

Post by ToKreTu »

I cannot believe it: P3D V4.3 does not run with my ASUS Strix GTX 980 Ti.

During startup I get this message:
"Prepar3D was unable to initialize the rendering system and will shut down. Please make sure this system has a video card that supports DirectX 11 and that the drivers are up to date"

I've bought the version 4 of P3D for two reasons.
1. it supports Oculus Rift natively, and
2. it is a 64bit-software now.
In the course of the new installation I also updated my Oculus Rift software and my graphics card drivers.
P3D V3 was always running with this graphics card, but now it doesn't any more too.
I went back to older NVIDIA drivers: 353.62, 388.31, 388.43, 390.65, 398.36, and the newest 416.34 -
P3D V4.3 is only running with 353.62 and Oculus Rift needs at least 388.31 (or higher).
Therefore P3D can never run together with Oculus (as you are claiming).
I mean, my GPU is quite widely spread and well known among the flight simulator community and therefore I hardly can accept that it shall not cooperate with P3D.

1. Went through all this: viewtopic.php?f=6322&t=128394 step by step
2. Disabled onboard Graphics in BIOS
3. No add-ons (naked P3D V3.4)
4. Deleting the three indicated folders named “Prepar3D v4” before each new try
a. %PROGRAMDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4
b. %LOCALAPPDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4
c. %APPDATA%\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D v4
(I’ve created a batch-file to do this and I’ve used “Delete Generated files”)
5. New installation after downloading the software single pack wise (not as .zip)
6. Disconnecting all unused USB-devices and Oculus Rift
7. Deactivating Windows “Controlled folder access” (actually it’s called Exploit-Protection)
8. Uninstalled ASUS GPU Tweak
9. Trying drivers from ASUS and Nvidia
10. Most recent graphics driver
The only point is: My Nvidia Control Panel has no “Preferred graphics processor” option, so I cannot set it to “High-performance”. (This is only available for “energy saving GPU-technology” from Nvidia.)

My system
- Prepar3D V4.3 Professional 4.3.29.2550
- Windows 10 Pro 64bit (most recent updates)
- CPU i7-4790K 4.00GHz
- 16GB RAM DDR3 1333MHz
- HDs: C: SSD 512GB, D: 2 x HD 8TB (RAID 1)
- GPU ASUS Strix GeForce GTX 980 Ti OC with 6 GB VRAM
- 1 Monitor Dell U2717D with 2560 x 1440 (32 bit, 59 Hz)
- Oculus Rift disconnected

Are there any known issues with this GPU?

Thank you, Tokretu

I used the 980Ti up until Feb of this year... never had problems with it.

Try using the display driver uninstaller (DDU) with Windows in safe mode to remove all NVidia files and folders. This cannot be done unless the OS is in safe mode. Then install the latest NVidia driver and see how that works out. Sometimes left over files from different driver versions can be a problem.

Problem solved!!
*********************
I made a Windows new-installation using the "Windows Defender Security Center".
(took about 20 to 30 minutes)
All Software is purged except drivers. Windows components are all updated. User Data remains untouched where it is.
Now P3D V4.3 (naked) runs fine.

Now I'll have to reinstall many programs but it was time to do that anyway ..
