I7 4790k OC @ 4,5 GHz / upgrade I9 9900K ?

Post by Sky_1 »

I want to upgrade my CPU, motherboard and RAM, and i'd like to hear your advices.
Would it be worth to upgrade the CPU I7 4790k OC @ 4,5 GHz with I9 9900K ?
How important is the CPU cache, for gaming / flight sim , actually ?
I7 4790K - 8 mb cache
I9 9900K - 16 mb cache
Thank you, any advices are welcome

I don't think P3D performance improves with number of cores but core speed is the important criteria, and as you add cores you are adding heat sources to the CPU speed becomes limited more so than say the quad core 4790. The 8700K is a step up that I have already made and I am happy with it. I have slightly faster CPU with six instead of four cores, but I cannot overclock the six cores as much as I could four. There are also notable improvement in the chip architecture, chip set performance and ability to use DDR4 DRAM, which I have running at 3600 MHz.

Cache size is not a normal issue for users, it is sized to balance many engineering considerations.

Geekbench i7-4790K : 4909 https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/1537
Geekbench i7-8086K : 6137 https://browser.geekbench.com/processors/2146
Geekbench i9-9900K : 6248
Geekbench i7-9700K : 6297
(from https://wccftech.com/intel-core-i9-9900 ... ance-leak/

The 9700K has a theoretical plus of 28% over the 4790K
A theoretical plus of 28% in a CPU-constraint scenery/aircraft means for example 25 fps -> 32 fps (theoretical)
The 9700K has a financial plus (costs much less) than the 9900K

P3D uses one core for its central tasks and other cores for scenery processing (not steady but in intervals as new scenery has to be processed).

Looking on the turbo frequencies per used cores:
https://hexus.net/tech/news/cpu/121019- ... s-impress/
if one decides to activate three additional scenery processing cores (AffinityMask), with four cores, the 9700K runs on 4.7 GHz without overclocking.

So if I would have the choice to upgrade, I would prefer the 9700K (maybe next year ;-)

I have been spending many hours every few months trying to determine if I should upgrade my Prepar3d rig. I currently run an Asus Z97 Deluxe MB, i7-4790k overclocked on all cores at a solid 4.7Ghz, 32GB Corsair premium DDR3-2133 mem OC'd to about 2600, EVGA GTX 1080 ti SC2 11GB, 3 x 1TB SSD's. I run a 4K/60fps monitor over Displayport, and a couple other monitors and a TV, but these are not used for P3D.. The core of this PC is 5 years old. I've built my own PC's since I sold my $14K (Yes, that's $14,000.00) loaded IBM PS/2 Model 80 in 1989 for $2K. I typically built a new PC every 2'ish years. Intel simply has not made any real improvements that would impact my P3D performance IMO. My 4.7Ghz overclock is basically on par with the latest top of the line Intel CPU's.

My P3D has about $3K in add-ons and also TrackIR and it works very well. There are a few places it drops the frame rate, but mostly it is pushing the 4K monitor at 30-50fps with most settings maxed and a few at 80%.
I just don't see the point of building a new rig to gain maybe 20-30% frame rate. This is what I have figured from my research. That primary CPU core clock speed is the most crucial CPU performance metric for P3D. A good graphics card is essential. My GPU sometimes loads up 10GB memory and hits in 90%+ utilization, but it all seems to mostly stay within it's capability.

As much as I am ready to spend money on a new rig I can't justify it. I only use that PC mainly for P3D. I sometimes pop in another SSD which has Windows 10 as opposed to Win 7 for P3D and use it for other stuff, but this is rare. I have an old 2012 I think i7-860 OC'd to 3.7Ghz on all cores that I do 95% of my computing on. I feel I may as well use it since it's always on since it runs my 6 1080p security system cameras, recording them 24/7/365, and it still has power to do MANY other processes at the same time. These PC's just keep performing, unlike the old days when it was necessary to upgrade bi-annually.

I'm still waiting for double performance before I spend another $2K+ to build a new rig.

Also, a tip from an old computer guy. Use the best quality PSU with at least 20% more wattage than everything on your PC maxed out. AND use a quality power conditioner to feed it only perfect power. I have not had a single electronics equipment breakdown in 20 years because ALL my electronics are on UPS's and/or power conditioners. Some devices (like home theater equip) really thrive on sine wave UPS/conditioners. My security system has been running for many years. Only one of my 6 cameras was not obtaining power through a UPS/conditioner and it is the only thing that ever died on me.

Cheers!

Hello, please, can you explain how I do this? I am not a computer expert, nor do I speak English very well (I use Google Translator), so I ask you to explain me in a simple way so that I understand. Thank you.

Section [JOBSCHEDULER] in prepar3d.cfg, see
Advanced Configuration

To calculate the affinity mask value for your specific processor:
http://www.gatwick-fsg.org.uk/affinitym ... m=utilties

The bits of the calculated number determine the processing tasks that p3d will setup.
One of these tasks acts as a "central processing task" (runs the p3d main task).
The others render scenery.

The parameter FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION in the [MAIN] section determines the percentage that the p3d main task spends for scenery rendering too (besides doing all the other important stuff).

Example for running p3d on core 2, core 3, core 4 and core 5 with the above mentioned affinitmask calculator:
Affinity Mask [ Binary = 111100 ]
(read the binary string from right to left, so core 0 and core 1 are not used by p3d and core 6 and 7 are leading zeroes, therefore omitted)
fsx.cfg or prepar3d.cfg configuration file entry to add/change

[JOBSCHEDULER]
AffinityMask=60

As three extra cores are used for rendering, I would set FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION to 0.1 = 10% rendering on the main core. My experience: reducing FIBER_FRAME_TIME_FRACTION (short FFTF) below 0.1 leads to blurries/popping in scene rendering and more than 0.1 reduces frame rate unnecessary.
Its a bit "trial & error"...

simple answer - yes, whatever fast and qore quantity you can found you can got profit from it, it's all about your settings, more cores and ghz then more details you can use in sim, same about video card if you use big resolution monitor 3440x1440 or 4-5k just take best gpu what you can found, but you can confuse with some scenaries wich can not use cpu, by my guess use overload commit charge, so some heavy(really heavy scenes can be fill better with 64gb ram, in my case 9700k/32gb/2080ti p3d some time use around 100% gpu/cpu, when commit charge overload, loading cpu/gpu drops down, so if you can take more ram more cores more hz, just do it, you will never overkill with p3d, sure if you want use heavy scenes,, you can found in other threads, what part of system use gpu, what cpu, and what need more ram/vram
p.s. and sure it's all about heavy scenes, weather, lights, etc. keep in mind you can change prepar3d.cfg settings much more than you can with menue options, so if you can, just do it, befor i use 4670k/8/980 with full hd resolution, well it's was more than enough for most of sceneries, but some time it was really overloaded, same now, my system now around 4 time faster than was, but some time i have same overload situation with much more density scenes of course; but again if you do not use ac/weather/sceneries what really heavy for system, you can use any midend system with no problem with very good settings, it's all very flexible, and dpepend only of your quality priority, forexample with good gpu you can use shadows in aircraft with 8192 resolution with no problem and no aliasing at all, or can add lod radius to 8.5-14.5* with good cpu/ram, same about autogen etc. etc. so whatever you will give to sim, all of it can be used around 100%, because of very flexible settings
*btw, be carfull exactly with lod radius, you can use for exammple almost all scenes with 12.5 then, if you forgot about it, and hard scenes will just unflyable till you drop it to 8.5 for example, same with some other components, what you have to remember, when change it...
