p3d V5 GPU Memory Usage

Post by CTVredvirus »

I have bought P3D v5 for a couple of hours ago and installed orbx, since orbx now support it, when i check mt GPU memory usage it says around 6.2 – 6.4 of max 6.8 I have a RTX 8 GB. Firstly why dosent it use all the memory of the GPU and second, is there or will it get a setting as in GTA V for the program not to exeed the GPU memory limit? Once that memory is ful the simulator hangs. Also i have 16GB in ram today will it help in anyways by installing 32GB ?

I changed the post title from "p3d V5 GPU USAGE" to "p3d V5 GPU Memory Usage" for clarity.

1) Windows uses the GPU for the operating system and other applications. Windows 10 provides each application a memory budget. We don't have any direct control over the budget. It may go up or down depending on what else you are doing on your system. It's the app's responsibility to stay under budget.

2) We will continue to work ways to avoid going over budget. For certain UI settings like terrain, and advanced atmospherics, we can predict memory usage well, because we control the number and size of all textures and buffers used by those features. For the general sim, it's hard to do because it is very content dependent. Every model and texture added to the scene takes GPU memory. Compressed 4k textures take up 16MB each which can add up really fast.

3) DirectX11 allows applications to go over budget and the driver then attempts to shuffle resources on and off of the GPU to keep the app running. This tends to cause major performance issues, so it was always best to stay under budget, It just wasn't clear in Dx11 what your budget was or how much was in use. DirectX12 drivers don't allow apps to go over budget, but we do get clear information on memory usage. We've added this data to the InfoGen text to help users tune their settings and content. Our focus for 5.0 was to optimize performance under the assumption that settings and content are tuned to keep the app under budget.

We will look into error popup. I think advanced atmospherics is currently limited to two cloud layers. One or two of the default themes has three. Also, please note that the advanced atmospherics feature is GPU memory intensive, especially on the higher settings. Large volume texture resources are used on the GPU to simulate clouds. If you are running out of GPU memory, you might want to turn the setting down or disable it when flying over heavy add-on content.

Prepar3D v5 is DirectX12 only. Sorry if that wasn't clear. I referenced differences to try explain why things work differently in v5 (Dx12 only) than they did in v4 (Dx11 only). We've been able to make some great strides in performance by having the direct control and threading support that Dx12 provides, but we lose out on some of the capabilities built into the Dx11 driver as a result.
