Plagued with KernelBase.Dll CTD Errors with 4.4

Post by JasonW »

Hello, wondering if someone could look into this. Ive ran out of ideas. 4.4 has brought many KernelBase.Dll CTD's to my system and I cant seem to get it running like it used to. Ive never had a problem with the other versions and Im on the same machine that Ive always used with no hardware changes.

Ive gone through the basic debugging steps posted here, Ive formatted windows (4 times), cleaned drivers, full install of V4.4, stressed my graphics card, tried to run V4.4 with no addons, went back to stock clock speed on processor, still getting KernelBase.Dll CTD, even in stock F16.

My computer has been cleaned and fans are free of dust.
I7 6700K (oc'd to 5.o but this is the same stable clock that ive used since 4.2) (have also tried to resolve this at stock clock)
GTX 1080TI (417.35 drivers) via HDMI to a HDTV
Samsung NVMe 960
Windows 10 fresh format, version 18.09 build 17763.195

I do the same scenario, load up f16 at KSFO and fly the bay inland for as long as I can. Right now I only have Orbx Global, NCA region and Orbx libs installed. No other add ons, at all. When I get one of these crashes, deleting sceneryindexes folder seems to help for a little while but its soon back to crashing. Heres the latest event viewer..

Thanks.

Re: Plagued with KernelBase.Dll CTD Errors with 4.4

Post by downscc »

Try running the free display driver uninstall tool (DDU) and make sure you run it in Windows safe mode. Kernelbase errors can be, but are not limited to, having multiple versions of driver files present in your machine. Checking the clean install in the NVidia installer does not wipe out old files, it only ignores your previous settings.

Thanks for the reply Dan.

I have ran DDU (version 18.0.0.6 in safe mode) on every attempt at a clean install. Unfortunately, it didnt make any difference.

For what it's worth:
try an older video driver. I'm using 378.78 on GTX1080ti without issues.

Re: Plagued with KernelBase.Dll CTD Errors with 4.4

Post by Blaunarwal »

I have a brand new system and had kernelbase.dll ctd's from time to time from the beginning in November. I read, that it could be because of hardware defects. Could be, new parts, not known before. My system was overclocked with AI Suite from ASUS, which did not run satisfactory. Alsways produced bluescreens during oc tests but settled once at 4.9 GHz and said it's a stable rate.

Yesterday, after failures shown in the windows restore database, I decided to set my system to default values in the BIOS. It now runs at 4.6 GHz and my impression during the last flight is, it is rock stable. Of course I will watch this longer, a week or so should be minimal length to be sure, CTDs have gone.
The sim is not slower now. It runs as fluid as before. I tested several short flights. I have a good faith in P3D4.4 again.

There may be a way to overclock better with manual voltage settings but at the moment, I don't need a system going to the max, but a stable system. My old 3770K run at 4.3 GHz. The new cpu has double number of cores and a stable clock rate of 4.6. I don't need more at the moment but a system I can enjoy an fly.

I also should mention I use the latest NVidia drivers on the GTX1080 ROG 8GB. I never uninstalled old drivers, just installed over the old ones using Geforce Experience. The only advice I can give you related to GPU to clear the shader cache after each driver update.

Maybe a hardware damage. I remember once improved stability placing the RAMs differently. And make sure to try default BIOS settings. It really cured my issues here.

I had this problem with CTDs reporting kernelbase.dll with every single flight. It could last anywhere from takeoff to several hours inflight.
It proved to be a matter of my hardware not being able to perform as much as I wanted it to in my settings. After I limited my framerate to a level where the pc could keep up with frame rendering and autogen being drawn without blurries and pop-ins, I had no more crashes with kernelbase in my logs.

Not only does frame reducement eliminate pop-ins because the pc was always lagging behind in the render cue, but also lets the system breathe a little better.

Tip: Press shift+z inflight a couple of times until you get a fps counter. Limit the fps in the sim settings to a few frames over your average fps and check stability. 30fps (if you have a 60Hz monitor, 35 if you have 70Hz) is a good place to start since it matches a whole number in where monitors operate. (60Hz divided by 2) This reduces any jitter noticeably.

Edit: And also run with no overclock. The little bump in GHz makes up for a huge bump in temps, and if the CPU throttles down as a result, you will actually run worse on a overclock.

yes I have had a huge increase in CTDs kernelbase.dll as well since moving to 4.4 and am gradually working through fault finding to no avail . Even upgraded my graphics to RTX 2080 and clean reformat of entire system well overdue but still there and no obvious logical reason. Frame limiting is no go for me , complex scenaries and planes where you cannot achieve 30fps especially n VR get knocked for 6 with frame rate limiter and unusable. To be honest no idea but all I have seen is general fault finding no route cause .Started in 4.4 so something changed .

Im glad you posted as I was about to throw more money at this with a new card. Scaling settings back didnt help me either with pure vanilla P3D. Ive tried frame limiting too. Still crashes. Ive had this rig since V4 released and never had this kind of trouble. I guess my sim days are over until a new release of V4.

I tried to replicate your flight from post 1 today - take an F-16 and fly inland from KSFO.

No problems at all here. How long can you fly before the problem occurs?

My system is an i7 7700K, 16 GB og RAM, nVidia GTX 960 graphics, Windows 10 Home, fully updated, as is the rest of the system including all drivers. But I do not have ORBX....

Most of the time it will crash around or just past San Carlos

Ah OK, by "Inland" I understood flying east from KSFO across the bay and on, whereas you flew SSE from KSFO down the coast of the peninsula.

So I tried to replicate this, taking off from KSFO and flying down the peninsula coast, past the end of the bay and further on until I came to KLAX. No issues at all on the way.

This is P3D v. 4.4, with FreeMeshX and UTX USA v. 2.1 for P3D, running under Windows 10, fully updated. The hardware is an i7 7700K, 16 GB of 2600 MHz DDR4 RAM, nVidia GTX 960 graphics.

Good luck. Nobody has been able to help me so far. Theres a few folks on the FB groups with this same problem so its got to be something with the new build. Ive reinstalled os 4 different times even tried under-clocking my factory overclocked card. Nothing works and my hardware is fine on any other application or game. I check around everyday for a fix, my sim is useless right now. :(
