converting openflight files to compatible p3d file formats without 3Ds Max

Post by han.rohana »

Hi,

I have a bunch of openflight models. I am trying to convert from .flt to .mdl
I've used 3Ds Max 2015 and it works well. But my trial licensed has expired. I'm trying to figure out how to use flt files without having to buy 3Ds Max as you all know it costs a bomb.

I installed ModelConverterX. But it seems like it is meant for Ms Flight Simulator. I manually changed the path to p3d. Searched the same files in p3d SDK and replace the path. It worked I guess.

Here is what I've tried.
Converted openflight to collada. Open up collada in ModelConverterX. (Good)
Exported collada to .X then convert it to .mdl using XtoMDL.exe (seems good, no error, produced .mdl file)
Exported to .mdl (seems good, no error, produced.mdl file)
Add in model in ADE (seems good also as I can see the shape of the model added)
Copy in into Addon Scenery (Not showing in prepar3d)

Question : Is ModelConverterX compatible with p3d v4? As I said earlier, I have to manually changed the path to p3d SDK. And there is one file that P3D SDK don't have - makemdl.exe . I guess that is the reason why it can't produce a proper .mdl file.

But I did convert the files to .X only, and manually convert it to .mdl using XtoMDL.exe command prompt that works well with 3Ds Max before. It still doesn't work.

I hope someone can lead me to a better solution apart from buying the license for 3Ds Max. Thanx!
