Suggestions for a gaming monitor for P3Dv5

Post by Chevalier »

There didn't seem to be a better subforum for this, so here goes:

System and software specs: Windows 10 Pro, Version 10.0.19045 Build 19045; Processor Intel(R) Core(TM) i7-7820X CPU @ 3.60GHz, 3600 Mhz, 8 Core(s), 16 Logical Processor(s); Installed Physical Memory (RAM) 64.0 GB; NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1080; P3Dv5.3.17.28160; LINDA 3.3.5.1363; FSUIPC6, Version 6.1.9; Orbx (BASE pack, openLC North America, Buildings HD, TerraFlora v2, Airport Pack); Chaseplane v1.2.58.0; ASP3D v1.0.8080.26231.

I'm currently using three monitors (well, two monitors and one 32" flatscreen TV) with the 32" as the main display and bracketed by the other two (see below). I want to update my current arrangement by replacing the middle TV display with a true gaming monitor while still flanking that with two (admittedly aged EliteDisplay E201) smaller 20" ones. The principle intention is to continue using this system purely for flight simming.

What would you recommend as a replacement for the main, middle monitor?

As you didn't get an answer...
...some years ago, I bought a new monitor: LG 34GK950F, connected via Displayport KVM to my two rigs:
one for flight simming and the other for home office.

This monitor isn't manufactured any more, it wasn't cheap but these two points make me happy until now:
* Monitor is curved and wide, it's likesitting in the cockpit, not looking into it.
* Monitor runs with 120 Hz and is "G-Sync compatible" with my RTX 2070

G-Sync together with RivaTuner locked framerate to 30 fps gives me a smooth feeling, no noticable stutter or tearing in most cases:
when the framerate falls a little below 30 fps, G-Sync doubles the monitor frequency meaning
the monitor run these 28 fps with a frequency of 56 fps by doubling the pictures instead of falling back from 30 to 15 fps as in 60 Hz times.
So, in such situations, I don't have the former 30-15-30 stutter but a 30-29-30 picture flow, not noticable to me.

Finally, I can recommend any flight simmer a wide screen monitor with G-Sync (N-Vidia) or FreeSync (AMD) or both and at minimum 120 Hz.
But be warned: your GTX 1080 may be a little weak for these big resolutions: especially in cloudy situations, my RTX 2070 has to do a lot of work with a lot of pixels.
