Only way to stop it for me was to:
1. Go Off line
2. Uninstall it
3. Reboot windows
4. STOP the Windows Update Service from "Services(Local)"
5. Connect the PC back to Internet
6. Wait for a future update on the issue.
I was having this issue with V4, so far no problems using these steps.

So far v4 seems fine on my system under KB4038788. Under what conditions does the BSOD occur?

OK, I'm having similar issues after KB4038788 was deployed on my machine last week.
OS: Win 10
P3Dv4

Upon loading ANY scenario on the welcome screen, P3Dv4 would crash with faulting module ntdll.dll EVERY time - instantly, didn't even get the loading bar.
Unfortunately, rolling back/deinstalling the update did not help at all - still the same behaviour.

And I found out why: Despite having uninstalled KB4038788, the file "ntdll.dll" in C:\Windows\System32 still stayed the same version that came with the update (was not replaced by the previous version which was present before installing KB4038788)

After the update, ntdll.dll had the version 10.0.15063.608

And that's exactly the version that caused the problem on my PC. I downloaded a previous version of ntdll.dll and replaced the file, just wanted to try this - now everything is working great again, no problems anymore, and I can load flights.
So, at least on my system, I could clearly narrow it down to this Microsoft-made ntdll.dll that came with the last update.
I actually wonder why it was not removed after I uninstalled the KB though - pretty weird...

I would just like to add that update KB4038788 also made my P3D crash while trying to use third party addons. Hoping LM comes out with a patch if enough people complain about it.

What's the ntdll.dll version before the update - the one that is working?

I've actually no clue to be honest - downloaded version 10.0.14393.0, some version from 2016 just to be able to test it.

How did you replace the file? It won't allow me to delete the old one or copy the replacement into system32. I am logged in as administrator.

Yes, the file is owned by "Trusted Installer" - you have to take ownership in the security settings in order to be able to modify/delete/replace it.

This rubbish with the KB4038788 Microsoft update has gone on long enough, Microsoft and LM do something to resolve this issue, and stop brushing it under the rug as if it does not exist, it does and apart from frustration it is totally unecceptable.

My computer, $3000 dedicated to flight sim use, my program P3D v3 Pro $200, my aircraft PMDG B737-800 $200 and without deleting the update I am unable to fly.

We cannot go on forever without windows updates , what we are doing at present is only a bandaid fix for a severed left leg.
If this was my new car with this type of comparable problem the dealer would find it parked through his plate glass window on Monday morning.

Am I angree, darn right I am, fix it NOW or at least post updates on progress to resolve.

The last time I will post this suggestion, I promise. There have been updates in the past that have fouled up the performance of certain programs on windows. The solution, for years, if this happened was to hide that one windows update, so that it would not install itself in the future, which is beyond simple to do. This does not mean that you block all windows updates, which is not a good idea. Why people are hyperventilating and twisting themselves into a pretzel over this issue is beyond me. I read on Avsim, the day that KB4038788 was causing problems with some users with P3D version 3, I simply went into windows update menu, right clicked on that KB, and selected Hide. All other updates released that day, were then installed and everything works normally. No problem, simple, did not have to reinstall P3D, did not have to format my hard drive, didn't have to email Bill Gates of LM, and I did not a a nervous breakdown over this issue. ;)

Sorry I missed your post, I will do yours suggestion in the morning.

Not being a computer guru much of what I read goes straight over my head.

Thanks anyway from an old guy that was born long before computers.

There is a very simple solution for this without having to disable security updates.

1. Load P3D.
2. On startup screen leave everything as default and choose 'South Pole Station' as your airport and start.
3. Once its loaded (it won't crash this time) choose End Scenario > New Scenario and choose whatever plane and airport you want and it will work!

Takes literally 1 min longer to get a flight going than normal. Panic over until MS resolves it.
