Flight controls lose focus

Got a question. When I click on 3rd party software (.i.e. ASN or Chaseplane) all my controls ( flight yoke , buttons and rudder pedals) including the keyboard lose focus (stop working) until I click back on the main window. Is this normal? I do not remember this happening before. I have searched the internet and the forums and I am not seeing much on it.

I appreciate any help in advance.

You may have in Options>application ..pause on task switch ticked...

Thank you for the reply. That box is not ticked. The sim does not pause.

any other suggestions?
