whats the deal with the new external sim APIs? it is not clear to me what benefit they provide. why were they created and what are some examples in which they might be used?

Mid to High fidelity simulators often have strict requirements about the accuracy of the flight model, for which the in-box simulation might not be good enough. In the past, users could override the aircraft position, orientation, and velocity using simconnect, but the internal physics model would then extrapolate from the new data and keep updating, and the two simulation models would fight each other. These APIs were introduced to remedy that situation.
