I think you need to untick the Dynamic 3d Autogen Vegetation box at the bottom of the Scenery Objects settings. If that box is selected it sets Autogen draw distance to Custom, so I think the Dynamic 3d Autogen controls the draw distance in that case.

Yes, I also had the a2a 172 as default airplane, and the problem did not occur after switching to another aircraft.

The profile still jumps to Custom after setting a specific profile which is a bit annoying but at least it seems to store the settings correctly now.

Filling up your C drive completely is a very bad idea, it causes problems with performance and stability. You should always aim to keep a couple of Gigs breathing space for your OS. Increase the C partition size or move some stuff off the C drive.
