[RESOLVED]P3D v3.4 - Sun keeps disappearing

Postby Ray Proudfoot » Tue Jan 09, 2018 6:50 pm

For the third time in as many months the sun has disappeared from P3D v3.4. In all other respects the sim behaves perfectly so this problem is baffling.

I have followed the advice about deleting the sun file (sorry, can't remember its name) and that solves it for a while. I have also run the repair facility on the client. But still it keeps disappearing.

I run AS16 and ASCA. Is that responsible in any way

Any help in permanently fixing this would be appreciated.

Hello Ray

The Actual Sun disappears Or the Sim just becomes dim \ dark ?

---------

I know Rex_Texture modifies the suneffect.cfg file but I am not sure in what way Activate Sky Cloud Art does.

If this happens again can you Copy the contents of the suneffects.cfg file And Paste it into your next post

Hello Poppet,

Thanks for your reply. The sun itself is not visible but the lighting remains unchanged including correct lighting based on where the sun should be.

I followed the advice you gave in AvSim and that does restore it when P3D next loads. But after an indeterminate period of time it disappears again. We’re talking days, not hours. During a 4 hour Concorde flight today it remained visible throughout.

I will do as you ask regarding posting the contents. I have also asked on the Hi-Fi forum in case it’s related to AS16/ASCA. One suggestion was to reduce visibility to a single layer with a range of 199 miles. I have yet to try that.

Location="0.37"
Intensity="0.4"

[LensFlare.10]
Texture="flare2.bmp"

Intensity="0.35"

[MoonCorona.0] // new moon
Texture=""
Intensity="0.0"

[MoonCorona.1] // waxing crescent
Texture="moonglow_right.bmp"
Intensity="0.3"

[MoonCorona.2] // first quarter
Texture="moonglow_right.bmp"

[MoonCorona.3] // waxing gibbous
Texture="moonglow_right.bmp"

[MoonCorona.4] // full moon

I've checked and sun.bmp, sun6.bmp and sunglow.bmp all exist in my P3D\texture folder. Any help on solving this would be appreciated.

Hello Ray

There is no Issue with the suneffect.cfg file you have posted, this is a default suneffect.cfg file so no changes have been made to this file

Can you confirm by launching Prepar3D to the default location, Turn left or right and click World and Time Preview and move the Time Offset slider forward and back, does the Sun appear ?

When this happened previously, what exact steps did you perform to resolve this, Did you Repair the Client or Content component maybe ?

This is possible an Issue with the ShadersHLSL folder by changes made form Add On's you are running, Which repairing the Client would resolve it

Hi Elaine,

Sorry for the delay in replying but I'm not receiving email notifications when a reply is made.

Anyway, I did as you ask and repaired the Client. That made no difference. Moon visible but no sun.

Next I repaired the Content. Still no sun.

Next I deleted suneffect.cfg and this has restored the sun.

But why should it be necessary to do this to restore the sun which shouldn't be disappearing in the first place?

My P3D v3.4 install is to D:\P3D so nothing odd there. I have AS16 and ASCA but those weren't running when I performed this test.

I'm beginning to think the easiest solution is to have a batch file that I run when P3D exits that deletes the suneffect.cfg but that seems a bit extreme. What else might be causing it?

Hi again Elaine,

I've tried again this time with AS16 and ASCA running and the sun has disappeared again. It's somehow linked to those programs but I don't know which one.

I did post on the Hi-Fi forums so I'll post an update and ask them to assist.

Thought I’d update you on the disappearing sun issue. I was able to tie the problem down to P3D being launched via SimStarterNG. I generated a debug pack and Peter (SimStarterNG author) confirmed it is a file encoding issue.

I’m the first to find it. It affects all v3.4 users who have SimStarterNG. He’s just replied to me saying he’s fixed it and an update will be released today.
