Overview
Prepar3D offers many different ways to set up multiple monitors and create additional views. The ideal way to accomplish this depends on the desired system setup. Below are a few options for achieving a multi-monitor configuration.
Creating New Views and Moving Their Windows
Prepar3D has the capability to create child views within the main application window. For example, you can fly in Cockpit view
and open an additional window that displays the Top-down view for extra situational awareness in the traffic pattern.
Making a New View
- Create a new view by navigating to the top menu bar and selecting Views -> New View OR Press [ (LEFT BRACKET).
- Select the desired view, and you will see this new view appear in a smaller window within the main application window. Notice that you can click and drag the window around the screen, but it cannot be forced out of the main application window. This is because it is currently docked by default.
- To undock the window, right-click within the view and select Undock Window. The window should now be separated from the main application and can be dragged to a different monitor.
Making a Window Active
You can have several different windows open at once. Prepar3D adds new windows to the bottom of the Views menu, and numbers them in the order that you opened them. The active view window has a check mark next to it. All keyboard and joystick view commands apply to the active window.
IMPORTANT NOTE: Instrument subpanels, the kneeboard, the air traffic control menu, and the chat window are also treated as windows.
To activate a window
- Click anywhere inside the window.
-or- - Press CTRL+TAB to cycle through the open windows, selecting the window you
want to activate.
-or- - In the list at the bottom of the Views menu, click the window that you want to make the active window.
Other Prepar3D window tricks
Prepar3D has many keyboard shortcuts to help you work with views and windows. For the complete list, see the Keys page of the Kneeboard (press SHIFT+F10). Under the View Commands section are some other tricks you can do with windows. The best way to learn about these is to experiment with them.
To close a window
- Click the view window, then press ] (RIGHT BRACKET).
-or- - Right-click on the window, then choose Close Window from the shortcut menu.
To resize a window
- Drag a corner or a side of the window.
NOTE: To move a window between monitors in full screen view, it is not necessary to undock the window as described below.
To move a Prepar3D window outside the Prepar3D application window
- Click the window that contains the view you want to move.
- On the Views menu, click Undock View.
- Drag the undocked window anywhere on the Windows desktop.
- Right-click the window that contains the view you want to undock.
- Click Undock Window.
- Drag the undocked window anywhere on the Windows desktop.
Stretching Views across Multiple Monitors
One way to span Prepar3D across a multi-monitor setup is to stretch the non-fullscreen window.
Hover the cursor over the sides of the window and drag the edges out to the monitors you want Prepar3D to span across.
Once Prepar3D is touching all desired monitors, press Alt+Enter to fullscreen. This should maximize Prepar3D so it is visible on all monitors you stretched it across.
Using Auto-fill Desktop
Another method of spanning Prepar3D across various monitors is to use the Auto-fill Desktop view group.
Right-click within the main Prepar3D window and select View Groups->Auto-fill Desktop.
This will create a separate Prepar3D window per monitor to display the multi-monitor view.
Press Alt+Enter to get rid of the borders and enter full screen mode.
