Spanking new hardware lower frame rates..

Postby Andy764 » Sun May 05, 2019 8:04 pm

Good Evening all,
Whilst I don't want to join the massive plethora of low frame rate issues you get on other forums, I'm looking for help/advice.
I have purchased a brand new PC. Spec as follows.
i9 9900K Clocked at 5.0ghz
16 GB RAM 2666Mhz
Samsung Evo M2 Solid state hard drive
GTX 1660Ti Graphics (6GB)
All Powered by a 700w PSU

Primary Monitor 34 Inch Curved Samsung model Resolution at 3440 x 1440
Secondary Monitor 27Inch Samsung Resolution at 1920x 768 ( Used to display overhead panel. )
Third Monitor - Flight Deck Solutions FMC/CDU resolution at 800x 600

Scenery settings are set no higher than normal/medium.
16X Aniostropic
AA - 4xSSAA
Texture resolution - High 2048x2048
V Sync slows it down further
FPS - No difference between limiting or leaving as unlimited.

My Set up is not full of Addons, but I Do use PMDG 737NGX, ORBX Global and some UK2000 Airports and Ultimate Traffic Live. Average Scenario load time is around 10 seconds so I know the power is there.
Now all that in mind and with what on paper is a screaming fast PC I'm achieving around 16FPS on the ground and about 21fps at 35000 ft. And it stutters from hell.
The only weaker link I can think is the GPU although its a highly rated brand new mid range card. But is that likely to be choking the rest of the system?

Any Hardware buffs out their I would love to hear your opinion before I end up spending on a much bigger GPU that might be entirely pointless..

Many thanks for your help.

Andy

One crucial point I missed above was the P3d version.

Version 4.5.

Thanks

Sounds ridiculous, but for a three monitor setup, your GTX-1660Ti is definitively on the lower end of possible GPU solutions, especially if you use 4xSSAA along with it. The stuttering might be due to the CPU, did you try an Affinity Mask inside your prepar3d.cfg? Try once a value of 21845 and check if this helps against stuttering...

Hardware: i7 8700K@5.0GHz, 2x16GB DDR4 3200MHz CL14 RAM, Gigabyte Aorus GTX-1080Ti OC, Samsung SSDs (250GB for OS, 1TB for P3D), Windows 10 Home

Hi Chris,
Thanks for the reply. I will try the affinity mask to see if that helps the stutters.
As for the GPU, you have mainly confirmed my suspicion as if I take the other monitors out of the equation I'm getting 70 - 80fps on the primary display.
Now the crucial question. (obviously I wont hold anyone to this) What GPU would be a wise investment. A 1080ti seems the most widely accepted as top end however that has been superceded by the RTX 2080 and 2080ti. Both are a huge leap in costs and both cost around the same amount as the entire PC.... My thoughts are getting the lesser 2060 or 2070 are more affordable but still sit in that 6GB range rather than the 8 or 11GB of the 1080s and 2080s. The 1080 range is now considered superceded. What ever choice is also going to depend on its power consumption. I had a 700w PSU installed. Oh my god this is a minefield..... :-)
Thoughts appreciated from any and all.

Many thanks
Andy.

So Just to update for anybody else with issues.
I bit the bullet and bought a RTX2080 to replace the 1660ti.
At Busy Addon London Airports, Now seeing a constant 38FPS
37000ft anything up to a stable 92fps
At Say Cancun or Athens (Payware) I get around 65fps.

So GPU definitely was the bottleneck.
So Specs now sit at
i9 9900K Clocked at 5.0ghz
16 GB RAM 2666Mhz
Samsung Evo M2 Solid state hard drive
Asus RTX2080 OC Edition
All Powered by a 700w PSU
Using 3 Monitor set up.

Addons Include ORBX GLOBAL AND LC, UK 2000 Airports, Ultimate Traffic Live, GSX, and numerous other Airports.

I made the mistake of buying a cheaper GPU on a massively speced machine. Don't make that mistake. Buy Cheap Buy Twice..
Having said that I do have a brand New GTX 1660ti for sale... :-)

Hope that helps any others with similar issues.

Andy
