Post FS9 scenery objects import nicely into P3D
on: April 9, 2012, 15:18

I was experimenting this weekend with P3D and scenery objects. I found that FS2004 Gmax scenery objects can export nicely into P3D.

I created normal MDL / XML file sets from exports from Gmax (the usual route) and set coordinates from 'Shift - Z' in P3D with a plane at position at an airstrip and set that into the XML, created the BGL with the FS9 BGL Compiler and set up the scenery in P3D, activated the scenery folder I had created and everything showed up perfectly.

Very nice....!

I used to be a huge scenery maker (not pro) back in the FS9 days before FSX. So this was nice to see again, getting back into creating some buildings on barren strips.

Very true, but I propose to you use this chance to create actual objects in FSX format which run on the GPU and not objects in 10 years old code which are emulated on the single main core?

Roger that. Thanks for the heads up Burkhard.

As soon as I figure out how 'that' is done, I'll certainly check into that. Only makes sense.

The FSX mdl SDK work perfect with GMAX. You have to make a few more steps especially for animated objects, and have more choices for materials, but it is worth it in the end.

There are potential texture issues between FS9 and FSX. Certainly the plain materials often do not appear in FSX. Also I think there are some problems with transparency but I am not sure of that......

Jon,

I just loaded up ADE and it works great in P3D. Just had some fun decking out a desolate airport.

I need to figure out how to add to the library next.

Nice work! Awesome program.
