Post Poor FPS Performace in MP...
on: March 24, 2011, 16:29

Here's something I sent to LM recently that maybe somebody has ran across...
We’ve been setting up (2) P3D stations with single channels (i.e. one PC as the Master and one as the IG slave) and have been getting poor frame rate performance in the order of 14-16 FPS with FPS Target set at 24 and Display Settings between Minimum and Medium Low . These stations are Windows 7 with Intel Core2 Duos 2.8GHz CPUs, 2GB RAM running an ATI Radeon HD 5450 card all of which meet or exceed the System Requirements from the P3D website. The network traffic between the two PCs is fairly low, below 250 Kbps, but the CPU on the Master is pegged at 100% and the IG between 65%-85%.... any thoughts?

On a separate, but similar issue… thinking that the poor FPS performance may be related to the Core2 Duos. We replaced one of the IGs with Core2 Quad 3.00GHz CPUs and 3GB RAM, and installed P3D. When P3D launches it freezes at the “Loading” window, the pop-up window says, “Loading Complete!” with the progress bar at 100%. The odd thing is that we had the Beta version of P3D running on this PC previously without any errors and good performance… again, any thoughts?

My 2 cents.

The ATI Radeon HD 5450 is a $35 Graphics card.!@!

Try a significantly better Graphics Card, prefereably Nvideo.
The Nvidea drivers seem to be far more P3D friendly than the ATI ones.

Comparison, running P3D in Free Flight (same high settings)
37 fps Nvidia GeForce GTX 480 (1.5 GB)
35 fps ATI Radeon HD 5870 (1 GB)
34 fps Nvidia GeForce GTX 470 (1.2 GB)
32 fps ATI Radeon HD 5850 (1 GB)
30 fps Nvidia GeForce GTX 465 (1 GB)
24 fps Nvidia GeForce GT 240 (1 GB)

?? fps ATI Radeon HD 5450 ( was not worth testing !! )

As far as CPUs, I have found that provided you are not trying to run a whole lot of other JUNK, at the same time as P3D, a FASTER Dual Core, is better than a slower Quad Core.

256 kbps Network traffic is really Insignificant, compaired with everything else the CPU is doing.

Definatly Consider going to 64 bit OS .. P3D runs well on W7 64, and will make use of the bigger memeory addressing space. (> 2 gigs Virtual memory) Try 6-8 Gigs - Ram is cheap !

When putting so much time and money into development of an expensive, low volume solution, it does not seem to make a lot of sense to skimp on the PC hardware, that is really only a very small part of the overall cost.

Geoff

Note:
The Nvidia GeForce GTX 295 and ATI Radeon 5970 has tested to be a
significant performance decrease to FSX. This is due to their integrated dual
GPU design.

I second that. Your cpus seem ok but ram is way too low and gpu is very poor. There is no getting around the fact that good graphics cards are often the most expensive part of a build. A cheap graphics card can render the best systems useless. Example: In the uk your graphics card is £39. A good graphics card is £250 and a very good graphics card is about £500. Your system specs are very low. The System Requirements have allways been bogus and they arent meant to be taken seriously at all. yes you can run pp3d on the Suggested System Requirements but propably with all the sliders set to 0 and with really crappy FPS.

I would agree with Geoff and Atorque, I had a core 2 duo laptop for development before switching to the i7 and a core 2 duo with that card is causing your bottleneck, same if you have an i7 with a poor card, I would recommend at least an i7 920 or above with at least an nVidia 470 or above, I am currently developing on an i7 860 with a gtx 470 card and can fly both FSX and P3D in multiplayer getting 35-50 FPS and that is using addon scenery and aircraft. The relatively small investment will pay dividends in performance for you.

Thanks for commenting on this thread everyone.

With a multi-channel setup, your slowest machine will dictate the maximum framerate for the entire simulation. Those specs on our website are minimum specifications for running the simulation, and do not guarantee a corresponding frame rate. From what I see of your specification, your graphics card looks to me to be the bottleneck. I would upgrade your graphics card and reassess your results and then upgrade more as desired.

We will look into posting additional ‘recommended’ system configurations onto the website in addition to the ‘minimum spec’ we have on there now.
