Post Terrain.cfg

Dear Prepar3D team:

Some years ago (November 2006) Richard Ludowise and Luis Féliz-Tirado released an updated and improved Terrain.cfg for FSX, which fixed some problems and limitations with the default FSX Terrain.cfg and added some additional capabilities for scenery designers. It also added backward compatibility support for some legacy FS9 scenery features.

This file is available for free download here:

http://forum.simflight.com/topic/44491-fsx-terraincfg-fix/

Since I have noticed that the default Prepar3D Terrain.cfg has very little differences from the FSX one, I suggest you to review and evaluate the mentioned modified Terrain.cfg, and if possible, try to include most (or all) of the applicable changes to the default Prepar3D file in a next release. I am sure it will benefit the product.

I am pretty sure that the authors of this modified file will be happy and honored if you decide to include their work in your already excelent product. Just contact them to make them know, if you find this file good and useful. I highly recommend it.

...for FSX only...; there is no service pack for P3D.
For those who are interested in the 6000+ lines of comparison between P3D vs FSX vs the simflight terrain cfg from 2006 (!) you may want to download the terrain_cfg_xls comparison.xls from here http://www.mystora.com/share/virtualfsx/share/janvaane/Prepar3d/

Actually, the the alternate terrain.cfg for FSX still provides some needed fixes for FSX after the service packs. The Aces team never incorporated the changes. There are some scenery packages that also incorporate their own changes, which can lead to unexpected displays for some packages, as you may not be aware of which CFG file is being used. Holger Sandmann had proposed some sort of standard to effect changes to the terrain.cfg file, and his sceneries include an option to changes the cfg file as needed according to which options you'd want.

The best solution would have been for FSX ( or P3D ) to allow a separate terrain.cfg file for each scenery folder. This would give complete freedom to the scenery designer, without worrying what the 'global' effect of a cfg file would display. In earlier versions of FS, we had the ability to name textures for display within the BGL Now we have to stick to the terrain.cfg

This is a serious issue for scenery design, I dearly hope LM will have a look into the suggestion Dick made.

Cheers,
Mark

Jan, thanks for that useful information. I hope it will help the Prepar3D team to develop a new standard Terrain.cfg that would support most or all of the scenery features currently in use by many addon developers, and the possibility to include individual and smaller Terrain.cfg files (with only the affected or modified sections) for those addons that for some reason could not fit with the standard. These could be located in the individual parent folders for each addon scenery.

It shouldn't be too difficult to check the local folder for a terrain.cfg before using the global terrain.cfg. I don't know what the cost would be in terms of framerates or memory. This has been a request since the FSX beta.
