Post Graphics Card Compatibility - Quadro FX 5600
on: January 31, 2011, 09:14

I just installed the client, have the latest driver for my Nvidia Quadro FX 5600 (as of last week) but when I start the application, I get the message:

This graphics card does not meet the minimum requirements...

Prepare3D will now exit.

I'm assuming that my card is capable, but something else is making it appear that it is not adequate.

Any suggestions?

I'm running Windows XP 32 bit.

Thanks.

Does your graphics card support Shader Model 3.0? I believe that is our minimum shader level required now (it was only 2.x for FSX/ESP).

I know nVidia quote the card as being shader 4.0 but I think something else is at fault here. I had to remove my FX4500 which is shader 3.0 but also reporting the same problem.

Is windows running at a low resolution, color depth, or with non-standard DPI? There is a screen size check before launch which is not DPI aware.

I've been on another task and this is my first chance to return to this still existing problem. As previously noted, the Quadro FX 5600 card supports Shader 4.0 so that shouldn't be the problem. Is is possible that the client is misinterpreting this card as a GeForce 5600 instead of a Quadro FX 5600? Again, the error I get is that the card does not meet minimum requirements for shader support. A quick internet search makes it look like the GeForce 5600 only supports Shader 2.0 and therefore would not be adequate. I'm running standard display settings are far as screen resolution and color depth.

Thanks

Update - get the same failure on three different computers:

Laptop with NVIDIA Quadro FX 770M on XP 32
Workstation with NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600 on XP 32
Workstation with NVIDIA Quadro FX 1700 on XP 64

You can see the common thread here - maybe Prepar3D just plain doesn't like the Quadro FX series in general and doesn't properly recognize that series of cards.

Hi smguest,

The Quadro is engineered for CAD applications rather than real-time simulation. I had a Quadro on a mobile workstation myself and found it poor for simulation and FSX/ESP, but great for AutoCAD and 3D modelling. I don't know about the error message you are getting, but to be honest, I would probably not be using a Quadro with Prepar3D. I have read some technical reviews and they indicate that the GeForce and Quadro essentially use the same GPU, but there are some driver differences and minor hardware differences which could make compatibility issues become apparent. Can you try a newer GeForce to see if it makes a difference?

We've found the performance of the Quadro FX series to be adequate in viz/sim arena for quite some time but our applications have been focused on OpenGL so that might be the difference. I certainly believe that for many applications, a good gaming card can't be beat but that isn't what they tend to use here so the Quadro FX cards have been the standard on our more capable workstations and therefore my intent was to evaluate Prepar3D in our "standard" environment. Since as you stated the GeForce and Quadro FX cards are very similar, I am surprised that Prepar3D immediately dismisses the Quadro FX as not being capable, especially the Quadro FX 5600 - I still have to think that this is an oversight or bug. Again, it isn't that Prepare3D doesn't run well if I add too much complexity to the scene with one of these cards, it's that it won't even start.

I'll eventually get my hands on a newer GeForce card, but that wasn't really part of my original plan.

Thanks for the guidance,

Could it just a case of the "Quadro FX 5600" entry in display.cfg, being missing ?

Can you check your Prepar3D.cfg and varify that it has detected the correct device? There should be a DISPLAY line that looks something like this:

[DISPLAY.Device.NVIDIA Quadro FX 5600.0]

We have Quadro FX 3800s on some of our development/test hardware, and have had no issues. Most all or our machines are running cards that are not in the display.cfg. These systems are running windows 7 however. I'd guess this is an XP issue. Either they need a display.cfg entry for XP, or NVIDIA may have left out some of the old-style capability bits used by dx9 in XP.

Hmmm - I don't seem to have a Prepar3D.cfg file but do have a Prepar3D.exe.cfg but it has no reference whatsoever to DISPLAY. I then did a search of every *.cfg file in the Prepar3d directory structure and there was no DISPLAY.Device reference in any of them.

In the display.cfg file, there are only a couple of NVIDIA Quadro references, Quadro FX 500, FX 600 and FX 700 (and a "Quadra" reference, the Quadra FX 2000) but none for the cards I have.

Thanks,
smguest

The Prepar3d.cfg file is located at:

c:\Users\YOURALIAS\AppData\Roaming\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3d\Prepar3d.cfg.

I looked into the code, and that error is a catch-all for cases where the DirectX device creation fails. The display.cfg is used to override user settings (like if the user set video memory to something higher than the card's capacity). It doesn't look like the display.cfg is related to your issue. I suspect that FSX and ESP would have the same issue. The old Quadro NVS 135M cards work in Prepar3D on XP. You might want to contact NVIDIA as this appears to be an issue with the XP-Dx9 drivers for Dx10 quadro cards.

Thanks - I found the Prepar3d.cfg file (slightly different path for XP) but it was completely empty.

I had run ESP a year or two so ago on the same computer and it had worked. I just tried ESP again but get the same error. About the only thing different that I can point to would be that I've updated the video drivers fairly often so it would appear that Nvidia changed something on their end.

Do you guys have an Nvidia POC I can forward this to?

Thanks again.

Ah. The cfg file should get populated after your first successful run of Prepar3D. I don't think we have an Nvidia POC for driver support, but they should have support available through their website. A big part of the justification for the price of professional graphics cards is support. If that falls through, I would go to the driver archive and roll back to something older.
