Post Prepar3d 1.4 crashes when I try to save settings
on: June 1, 2012, 00:42

Every time I press the 'apply and accept' tabs after a settings change in Options my system crashes. See error message below.

Problem signature:
Problem Event Name: APPCRASH
Application Name: Prepar3D.exe
Application Version: 1.3.3708.0
Application Timestamp: 4f516cc9
Fault Module Name: KERNELBASE.dll
Fault Module Version: 6.1.7601.17651
Fault Module Timestamp: 4e211319
Exception Code: e0434352
Exception Offset: 0000b9bc
OS Version: 6.1.7601.2.1.0.256.48
Locale ID: 3081

Additional information about the problem:
LCID: 3081

I've spent hours on Forums searching for a fix , plus, I'm on my second full download (phew!) in two days to eliminate a corrupt file. Carefully Installed as per instructions both times. careful with un-install as per instructions and I ALWAYS 'run as administrator".

My system
Windows 7/64
Intel 2600 K
8 MB RAM
Asus Rampage Extreme M/B
Three Nvidia cards (not SLI) running 7 LCD panels
Matrox Triple Head 2 Go
Full GoFlight Airline Pilot system
FSX fully loaded on "C" drive - Raid '0' - no problems at all. Active Sky XGraphics, ORBX, many addon aircraft, FSUIPC.
Prepar3d Installed on "D" drive (nothing else on drive and no add-ons at all) Single 7200n Seagate HDD

As I said FSX runs beautifully (well, as beautifully as FSX can) but I cannot do anything with Prepar3d, not even calibrate my flight controls without a crash every time I try to save settings. HELP.

I"ve been trying to use Prepar3d since it came out and have not had $9.95 worth of joy yet! Almost about to give it a miss and put up with FSX. Only trouble is there are heaps of you out there who are having joy, so I live in hope and I certainly want to support the project as it is the future. I fly real world aircraft too.

Hi computeraviator,

Commonly that error is associated with restrictive permissions on folders/files Prepar3D is attempting to access. Since you are right-clicking on the Prepar3D.exe and selecting ‘Run as administrator’, when running the application, I wouldn’t expect the crash from permissions to occur. One thing I’d be interested in seeing is if you do not hit ‘Apply’ and you only hit ‘Accept’ when you make the changes. Could you try that out and let us know? We plan to remove the ‘Apply’ button in future releases for various reasons.

Hi,

i had the same problem, even if i use "Apply" or "Accept".

I set prepar3d.exe to "run as administrator" and set "full access" for all files in the installation folder for my user-account.

Hi again,

in addition to my posting from yesterday.
I have the same crash information like "computeraviotor", kernalbase.dll, exception code ....
But i installed FSX and Prepar3d on the same drive (e:; not the system residence).

Greetings Matthias

Hi Adam,
Did as you suggested and I was actually able to change my resolution from default to 5040 x 1050 x 32 (TH2G ) and it saved! I just pressed "accept," and ignored "reply" on this occasion.
Unfortunately , it only did it this once and the previously reported anomaly returned with subsequent attempts to save any changes resulting in the same crash. Incidentally, all drivers are current.

Hello David,
did you install P3D in the root of the D:\ drive or in a folder in D:\
In either situation the drive and or the folder must have Full control permissions set include inheritable permissions from the object's parent.
To guide the exercise have a look here: http://janvaane.org/virtualfsx/?p=6279

Hi Jan. Double checked all permissions on (D:) including Prepar3d and all "owned" by me - David-User. As I said, I always activate the .exe file as administrator. No change to symptoms when I try to save settings.

Hello David, when you're looking at Control Panel\User Accounts and Family Safety\User Accounts, how many accounts do you have?
When you look at the properties of your installed P3D folder, how may Group or user names do you count; you should see at least Authenticated Users, SYSTEM, Administrators (name-PC\Administrators) and Users (name-PC\Users)
If you have another like DAVID (name-PC\DAVID). that's the account with the credentials the PC is running. That User Account should have the permissions set.
In the ultimate case I might help you remote with: http://janvaane.org/virtualfsx/?page_id=14

Hi Jan. Thanks.
I have checked the accounts and it is as you have stated. I do not have any other accounts. For this exercise I have deleted all accounts and am using the Administrators account with Guest Off (and that NVidia acount deleted UpDatusUser). I have ensured that I have FULL CONTROL on C:, D: and the Prepar3d Folder in D: plus the P3d.exe file which I always "run as administrator." I have checked until I'm blue in the face and I cannot find anything that I do not have FULL CONTROL over when it comes to programs BUT! When I look at the Properties of the Prepar3d Folder, the "Read Only" box is ticked, even though I untick and it goes through the process of applying attributes, when I close it and reopen, it is ticked again??? I'm obviously missing something but I cannot think what it could be. Happy to TeamSpeak. I'm in Brisbane, Australia GMT +10. Cheers.

...in conclusion after a long and pleasant chat session with "down under" it results in the observation that the initial downloaded Academic zip files did not pass the MD5 check sum test.
Unless the files where corrupted before installation, the sim functioned, including multi play session. However, saving any changes made the sim crash on the module kernelbase.dll
Which brings me to the urgent advice to anyone with fatal error or appcrashes to check at least the md5 checksum of any downloaded zip
Read this http://janvaane.org/virtualfsx/?page_id=6242 how to execute a MD5 checksum.

Hi computeraviator,

Would it be possible for you to install Prepar3D on your C: drive? Sometimes there can be other system issues, which installing Prepar3D on another drive might expose. If it works on your C: drive, it would at least give us more information. I am also curious if any of the add-ons you have installed with FSX are interfering at all with Prepar3D’s install. We do have many users successfully install Prepar3D on another drive, so it definitely is possible.

To janvaane’s comment above about checking the md5sums… If the unzip is successful, the md5sum would have to match what is provided on the Purchased Downloads page. If you are having any issues that are not related to the unzip of the files, checking the md5sum would provide no value. The md5sum is only used to ensure that the download of the zip file was successful.

Hi Adam, hi Jan,

i checked the md5sums with FastSum as jan described it above.
The md5 sums of my zip files are ok.
I tried to analyze the crash with sysinternals process monitor, but can't find any special of interesset.
It seems that dxdiag uses kernelbase.dll (succesfully) while prepar3d.exe crashes.

My installation crashes not only if i change some options. I allthough get a CTD, if i change time or date.

If it's helpful, i can send a process monitor logfile.

Greetings Matthias

Hello Matthias
I assume you launch the sim with right mouse on prepar3d.exe and Run as administrator
What is your installation path?

Hello Jan,

i set "run as administrator" at the compatibility tab at properties of prepar3d.exe.

My installation path is
E:\Program Files (x86)\Lockheed Martin\Prepar3D

My account has full rights on the whole drive E:
The same to the appdata folder for prepar3d.
