Post Does the unrelistic cloud issue in FSX exist in P3D?
on: May 7, 2012, 05:02

When I'm flying in and out of clouds in FSX, it is incredibly annoying and highly unrealistic to clearly see clouds in the distance whilst in a cloud. Furthermore, I frequently notice clouds further away in the distance superimposed on clouds closer in...again totally unrealistic. I show an example of what I mean. The image clearly shows the aircraft in a cloud layer yet cumulus clouds are clearly visible in the distance when they should obscured from view. Is this issue present in Prepar3D....if not I wish to purchase. Any help greatly appreciated as the issue spoils the realism. Cheers, Mark.

Hello Falconjet,

That is very odd. I wonder if this could possibly be a grahics card issue. I wonder also if perhaps you might have mixed in some FS2004 clouds into your FSX clouds.

The clouds (on my rig) do not do this.

In P3D, we do not have real weather, but some weather programs do work fine in P3D. We have the regular Weather Themes and also programmable weather.

(I am not sorry I left FSX. P3D is much better in scenery and clouds then FSX was, in my humble opinion and according to how my system can run P3D compared with FSX).

As Bill says, very likely one of his scenarios, I'd go with graphics card/driver. Never seen that myself in any of my MSFS sims.

Thanks for your reply guys. Could you tell me what graphics cards and driver you're both using? I've got the GTX570 and using driver 285.62

Thanks.

I am using an ATi 6870 on the April 2012 driver. Not using the latest May 2012 as TrackIR app has problems with it.

I've always had the cloud issue in FSX and P3D. I believe they said it could be fixed in a future update, or even V2. That was a long time ago, though, so I don't know when they plan to fix it now. I don't have v1.3 of P3D yet, so I can't check to see if its fixed.

I've never seen that problem either. My system is:

Intel i7 950
6Gb Ram
Nvidia GTX 295 - driver verrsion 296.10

FSX cloud rendering was not too bad given the technology of the time. Not quite had a chance to look at P3D performance and quality in this area yet either. There are third party atmospherics (and water) rendering technology companies out there though. So should the P3D devs ever feel the need to go 3rd party for this aspect of rendering, the links below may be worth visiting:
