Post P3D Vatsim integration
on: May 2, 2012, 20:03

One of the things I would and i'm sure many others would really love to see in P3D is a way to use vatsim. I have read various threads about people managing to get squawkbox working externally by messing about with files but this is an old vatsim client that has not been supported since January 2009. I also have the feeling that many of the bugs people are coming accross with in P3D has to do with people messing around with cfg files xml's etc surely LM can do a better job of integrating some kind of vatsim client so that the end user doesn't have to mess around with old buggy external windows etc while running P3D surely intergration is the way forward and i'm sure the vatsim network would support P3D intergration as P3D is clearly the future of serious flight simulation.

How about Lockheed deveoping a new Vatsim Client, and an IVAO client, and a FSHOST client, and a Pilot Edge Client --- where would that stop ?

Surely is up to these organizations to to create their own interface to P3D, if that is what they want.
If Lockhhed spent all it time providing such interfacing in it's CORE product, that is probably all they would end up doing, and P3D would never advance as a Sim.

I would suggest that VATSIM, (for example), needs to develop a Client that they can support . Actually, don't they already have all of DeYoung's code for Squawkbox (or could get it if they wanted) .. its probably just a questuion of determining the need to update it, and then finding someone who is willing to donate the time.

IVAO seem to be more on top of things, and seem able to support their own servers interacing to FSX.

Pilotedge the same, they seem to be able to inteface to FSX, FS9 and X-plane. If they wanted to, I suspect that P3D would be an almost trivial addition. The PiotEdge programmer seems pretty capable :)

At the moment, one can fly on Vatsim with both FSX & P3D. Yes, P3D needs a little configuration, but thats just a question of documenting the configuration procedure, and making it available . (or somene writing some code to do it programatically).

Actaully, more of an issue on vatsim, is the poor support for FSX (and P3D) SHARED COCKPIT. If something needs to be done by vatsim itself, its intergating this great feature more seamlessly into Vatsim.

Just my 2 cent. ( I do not speak for any of theses organizations, but I do fly on them, WITHOUT any difficulties).

I hear what you are saying Geoff but would it really be a lot of work to implement a Vatsim client into P3D? as it is the most widely used virtual air traffic simulation network in the world and I really miss communicating with other people from all over the world during long haul flights or even seeing other people at an airport near me, communicating with ATC before and during a flight etc the multiplayer feature on P3D is nice but i've not been able to make use of it so far although I have tried to connect to your own server a few times I managed once but I have not been able to since is it still online? Maybe I need to change some settings in my router again.

Unfortunately I do not have many friends who share the same interest in flying / flight simming that I do and none of my friends that do use flight simulation software have migrated to P3D yet so I am unable to connect to anyone directly to share a cockpit or fly in formation etc which lets face it is fun to do and brings a level of realism and community spirit to flight simulation that flying alone just doe not have.

I am a member of various virtual airlines and flying clubs online however they are all still using vatsim and FSX still :( maybe the lack of vatsim support is all that is holding them back from taking the leap forward.

Agreed it would be nice for Vatsim to develop a client for LM but have vatsim ever developed a client for any platform? I am not aware of them doing so maybe I am missing something?

I also agree that documenting a configuration procedure for getting online with Vatsim and P3D would be nice as I still haven't been able to connect to Vatsim with P3D which is what I would really like to do. I have found a few vague threads on other forums about doing so but nothing that I am able to follow by way of step by step procedure just vague hints and moving info from .xml files etc nothing solid I can follow.

If you have any tips on how you got P3D on vatsim it would be much appreciated as I can only find vague information on doing so :(

From what I have read ( I have not tried it), but Squawkbox works with vatsim, as long as you do not load the transponder DLL.

I have heard the same thing about Squakbox but this is the first time I have heard about not loading the transponder DLL do you know how one would go about doing this?

I imagine this would involve finding the transponder reference in dll.xml?

I have SB working including the XPDR. Installed it on the same pc asP3D and run it as standalone and it works fine. Checked out the XPDR function when online with VATSIM and that works as well. I made no changes or modifications, it just worked.

Oh by the way do you have FSX and P3D on the same machine or did you just install directly into P3D?

I also have SB4 working on a networked computer using simconnect. The only odd thing is the transponder gauge on the flight computer only shows in the background and not in the panel?

I was amazed to find that FSHostClient works with P3D also, without changes or modifications.

You might find that other software interfaces will do the same. Looks like some of it in the SB area already does. :)

Only just seen yout post, yes I have both installed on the same machine. Is that significant?

Hi guys, I'm the author of FSHostClient.

Just a quick note to confirm that yes, it does work with P3D. There were some problems with the way other aircraft were displayed though, so I've just now released version 1.2 of FSHostClient with full support for Prepar3D. Check it out and let me know if you find any issues.

Download FSHostClient 1.2 here:

Thanks,
Russell Gilbert

Thanks for the replies, guys looks like Vatsim is working on a new client they are doing a poll to see which platform to support so make sure you go and vote for Prepar3D guys :D
