Post Start window and FPS limiter
on: April 22, 2012, 21:21

I'm really missing the FSX start window. I imagine I'm not the only one who does not always start from the same airport. So why don't you give us a check box in the flight planner window to be able to start with this flight planner. It makes sense as every "real" pilot has to complete a flight plan ...

One thing that gives P3D hard time is the internal FPS limiter. We should have a reliable one and here's why. With or without the internal FPS limiter, my core 0 is 90-100% even when holding short on the runway. It never gets better .... With an external FPS limiter, core 0 gets some air and goes down to 50-60 % when holding short on the runway and then goes according to the other cores. For those who didn't try an external limiter, first download a core % usage gadget (Multimeter is an excellent one with fast refresh) to see how it goes and then watch core 0 with, without internal FPS and with external FPS limiter. You will rapidly see that we need an external FPS limiter but there's currently a problem .. I've try two of them : the one with antilag.cfg and d3d9.dll just doesn't work. The other one (FPS_limiter_0.2) works but creates screen problem with "go to airport" window. This window is partly visible after moving the mouse over the window which makes the parts appear when you go over them. So .... I use the FPS limiter because I can get more from my CPU (as for any CPU) ... it's far from perfect but much much better than internal limiter.

So, a real internal FPS limiter which doesn't overcharge core 0 should be a requirement for the next release. ALL your customers would greatly benefit from it.

Another thing I would like is finding the detailed list of cities and airports you mention in your site. I've searched to find them without success.

I bought P3D few days ago and I'm really impressed by the work done so far. Really good work. As many comments said, smoothness is really there even with FPS as low as 15 and perfect with 30, picture quality is also improved, Lockheed Martin planes are really fun ... just missing the F-35 ! I just hope you will be the first one to offer it. You should be the leader for this plane (if you're not, someone will ...) and why not showing the capacity of your new flight model with it.

Thanks

You might want to consider limiting P3D NOT to run on CORE 0 - leaving Core 0 free for other windows applications running on your machine.

I imagine you mean Affinity mask ? I tried but it seems that Affinity mask is not working in Prepar3D as it is in FSX. I tried the FSX tweak to free core 0 , which is Affinity mask=62 in my case as I have 6 cores, but then Core 1 becomes as busy as core 0 was before. So Affinity mask was just moving the problem to another core ... the only improvement I found was to use an external FPS limiter with internal to max. This works for sure.

I saw a previous post where a Lockheed P3D software engineer advised not to disable CORE 0, as P3D needs to run certain processes on the primary core. Not sure what the implications of that is .. but it might make my previous suggestion of disabling P3d on Core 0, to be incorrect advice ?

OK, yes, it moves the P3D load off CORE 0 to Core 1. This could be considered to be a good thing, if many other non P3D process running on your machine, are using CORE 0 by default.
