Adjusting Joystick Forces
If you are using a force feedback joystick, you can enable or disable any or all force feedback options:
- Control surfaces: When maneuvering the aircraft, you'll feel forces exerted on the aircraft control surface through the controller.
- Stick shaker: If you exceed the maximum speed in a jet, the controller will shake.
- Crash effects: If you crash, you'll feel it in the controller.
- Ground bumps: As you roll across the ramp, taxiway, and runway, you'll feel the bumps through the controller.
- Retractable gear thumps: When you retract or extend the landing gear, you'll feel it through the controller.
To adjust controller forces
- On the Options menu, point to Settings, and then choose Controls.
- Click the Forces tab.
- Select or clear the desired force feedback options.
- Click OK.
Note: To disable all force feedback options, clear the Enable force feedback checkbox on the Forces tab.
Force-Feedback Effects
If you're having a problem while using a force-feedback controller and have no problems while the force-feedback effects are disabled, the problem may be with the joystick controller.
To disable force-feedback effects
- On the Options menu, point to Settings, and then click Controls.
- Click the Forces tab (not displayed if a force-feedback controller is not installed).
- Clear the Enable froce feeback check box.
- Click OK.
Controllers and Sound Acceleration
Controller ports are sometimes located on the computer's sound card. If your sound card cannot properly process game port signals and high-quality audio sounds at the same time, you may need to reduce the sound playback quality.
To reduce the sound playback quality
- Click Start, and then click Run.
- In the Open box, type DXDIAG.
- In the DirectX Diagnostic Tool dialog box, click the Sound tab.
- Click Exit.
Device Drivers
Drivers are small software programs that allow your operating system to communicate with the hardware installed in or attached to your computer. A driver acts as a translator between your hardware and operating system, and can also enhance the operation of a particular piece of hardware, such as a video adapter or joystick. A damaged or outdated driver can cause many types of errors to occur.
A new driver for your joystick might allow your joystick to use features more efficiently or improve performance. The manufacturer of your controller probably offers free driver updates on their Web site. Contact your manufacturer to inquire about how to obtain and install the latest version of the driver.
